PURPOSE: To produce a hydroxyalkylalkylcellulose in good reaction efficiency by suppressing side reactions, by reacting an alkali cellulose with both an alkylene oxide and an alkyl halide in a specified two-stage process.
CONSTITUTION: An alkali cellulose (of an alkali content corresponding to 5W 80mol% of the total alkyl halide used in the reaction) is reacted with an alkyl halide (e.g., methyl chloride) in an amount of 0W80wt% of the total alkyl halide used at a temperature of about 30W90°C for about 0.5W5hr. Next, a necessary amount of an alkali hydroxide (e.g., sodium hydroxide) and the remaining portion of the alkyl halide are added to the reaction system, and the resulting mixture is reacted at about 10W90°C to produce a hydroxyalkylalkylcellulose.
