Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain N,N-dimethylamine with high purity by reducing the production of secondary N-methylamine which inhibits the reaction by adding formaldehyde or formaldehyde forming substances.
CONSTITUTION: By reacting an aldehyde with dimethylamine and hydrogen under pressure at a elevated temperature in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst containing Ni, Co, Cu, Mn, Fe, Rh and/or Pt, N,N-dimethylamine is prepared, in this case unconverted dimethylamine and excess of hydrogen are separated, then 0.1 to 25 weight% of formaldehyde or a formaldehyde forming substance to N,N-dimethylamine are added and the mixture is distilled.
