PURPOSE: To obtain an olefin oxide useful as an intermediate for urethane, etc. efficiently in high catalytic activity and selectivity, by using an antimony compound as a catalyst in epoxidizing an olefin with hydrogen peroxide.
CONSTITUTION: An olefin is reacted with hydrogen peroxide in the liquid phase in the presence of an antimony compound catalyst in an organic solvent, preferably an alcohol, particularly an organic carboxylic acid, to give an olefin oxide advantageously. An inorganic antimony compound selected from oxides, oxyacids of antimony, salts or esters thereof, halides, oxyhalides and sulfides and/or organic antimony compound selected from formulasIWV[R, X, Y, R', R" and R''' are alkyl, aralkyl or aryl; X and Y are further H, halogen, OH, etc.; (n) is the number of the repeating units in the polymeric structure], particularly formulas IIWIV, above all the compound of formula III or IV (X and Y are OH), may be used as the catalyst.
