Abstract:
PURPOSE:To prepare a high-mol.-wt. polycarbonate having improve resistances to heat and hydrolysis and useful as an engineering plastic by adding a phosphite compd. and a hindered phenol compd. to a polycrbonate prepd. by a specific method. CONSTITUTION:A phosphite compd. of formula I (wherein R1 is a 1-30C hydrocarbon group) (pref. tridecyl phosphite) and a hinderd phenol compd. of formula II (wherein R2 is a 1-30C hydrocarbon group) [pref. octadecyl 3-(3',5'-di-tert. butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionate] are added to a polycarbonate prepd. by the transesterification and melt polycondensation of a dihydroxy compd. [e.g. 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane] with a bisaryl carbonate (e.g. diphenyl carbonate) in the presence of a trsnsesterification catalyst (e.g. potassium borohydride). Thus, a high-mol.wt. polycarbonate with a residual catalyst inactivated. contg. no chlorine ion, and excellent in thermal stability, weatherability, hue, and hydrolysis resistance is prepd. without using phosgene.
