To obtain a quaternary diester in one step process by reacting a secondary amine and a halogen acetate ester.
A secondary amine of the formula R1-NH-R2 (R1 and R2 are each a 1-3C alkyl or a hydroxylethyl or the like) is gradually added to and converted with compounds of formula I and/or II (R3 and R4 are each an 8-22C alkyl or alkenyl or the like) at 50-110°C, the product solid amine hydrohalide is separated by filtration at 90-100°C. A post treatment is carried out at 40-100°C in a solvent (e.g.; ethanol) to obtain the objective quartenary diesters of formula III (X is a halogen). The secondary amine and the halogen acetate ester are reacted in a molar ratio in a range of 1.0:1.0 to 1.0:1.05. The quaternary diesters manifest excellent combined properties of softening properties, rapid biodegradability, low toxicity for algae, low toxicity for fishes.
