Abstract:
PURPOSE: To profitably prepare a vinyl glycol useful as an intermediate of vitamin A and a monomer for the preparation of a hydrophilic polymer, particularly a copolymer by isomerizing an unsatd. diol with rhenium or its compd. as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Diol (e.g. 2-butene-1,4-diol) of formula I (where R1-R6 are each H, 1-10C alkyl, 5-7C cycloalkyl, 7-10C aralkyl, mono- or bicyclic aryl and each of these groups may have an inert substituent) is isomerized in the presence of a catalyst made of rhenium or its compd., preferably rhenium heptoxide to obtain the objective vinyl glycol (e.g. 1-butene-3,4-diol) of formula II in high purity and a high yield.
