PURPOSE: To correctly print predetermined display characters or symbols on the side end face of a steel plate in a non-contact state by a method wherein a printer head is provided on the front of a second travel frame so as to move crosswise within a frame body on a first travel frame, rotate and move vertically in synchronism with an inclination detector, and move longitudinally along the steel plate side end face.
CONSTITUTION: A touch roll 3b of a first travel frame 3 is abutted on the predetermined side end face of a steel plate fed by a steel plate feed table 1. The inclination of the steel plate is detected by a steel plate inclination detector 3d. Based on the detection value, a printer head 4a on a second travel frame 4 is synchronously rotated, moved longitudinally along the inclination of the steel plate side end face, and moved up and down to be level with the steel plate side end face. A masking device 3c of the first travel frame 3 is abutted on the top and rear faces at the steel plate side end, and masking at the time of printing is maintained. The printer head 4a comes close to the steel plate side end face and comes to a stop at a printable position. While the printer head 4a is longitudinally moved along the steel plate side end face, predetermined display characters or symbols are printed on the steel plate side end face.
