A document distribution system includes a server (12) for receiving and/or generating documents and transmitting the documents to the user (10). The system has a first operation mode in which the server (12) transmits documents to the user (10) and a second operation mode in which the server (12) does not transmit documents to the user (10). The system (12) stores data concerned with all pending documents which are not transmitted to the user (10), and when the mode is changed from the second operation mode to the first operation mode, retrieves or generates a digital list of one or more pending documents. Then, the system (12) transmits a user summary corresponding to the digital list to the user (10).
