To find out a new process for catalytically telomerizing a conjugated diene, in which a highly active and selective catalyst system capable of forming the diene telomer in high yield and in high selectivity and enabling the simple separation and recycle of the catalyst system can be used.
This process for telomerizing the conjugated diene comprises reacting the conjugated diene, such as butadiene, with a compound containing active hydrogen, methanol as an alkanol, in the presence of a catalyst system comprising at least one transition metal compound, such as palladium acetate, at least one phosphorus-containing compound, such as triphenylphosphine, and at least one salt which forms a liquid under the conditions of the telomerization process, such as 1-n-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium bistrifluoromethylsulfonylamide.
