Abstract:

PURPOSE: To effectively obtain an optically pure 1-phenyl-1,3-propanediol com pound useful as a raw material for tomoxetine, fluoxetine (antidepressant), etc., from the optically impure 1-phenyl-1,3-propanediol compound by a simple means.
CONSTITUTION: A R or S-1-phenyl-1,3-propanediol compound of the formula (X is halogen, 1-4C alkoxy) having an optical purity of 20 to <100%ee, preferably R or S-1-(phenyl, 4-fluorophenyl or 4-methoxyphenyl)-1,3-propanediol, is recrystallized in a solvent, preferably hexane, heptane, octane, cyclohexane, ethyl acetate, diethylether, benzene, toluene, methanol, ethanol, ethyleneglycol, water or their mixture, especially heptane, toluene or their mixture, to obtain the highly pure R or S-1-phenyl-1,3-propanediol compound having an optical purity of 100%ee.
