PURPOSE: Hydrogen chloride is made to act on ethanolamine hydrochloride and the reaction is effected as the water formed during the reaction is excluded out of the reaction system, thus producing the titled compound, which is a synthetic intermediate of agricultural chemicals or dyes, in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: Hydrogen chloride is made to act on ethanolamine hydrochloride and the formed water is removed from the reaction system to give the titled compound used as a synthetic intermediate of ethylene-imine. The reaction is preferably conducted in the absence of a solvent in the presence of a catalyst such as magnesium chloride. The reaction temperature is preferably 145W180°C. In general, the reaction is effected by introducing gaseous hydrogen chloride into the melted ethanolamine hydrochloride.
