PURPOSE: To suppress formation of by-products and obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for epichlorohydrin extensively used as a solvent, etc., in high yield by reacting allyl alcohol dissolved in hydrochloric acid with chlorine using a wetted wall type reactor.
CONSTITUTION: A raw material solution 5 of allyl alcohol dissolved in hydrochloric acid is allowed to react with chlorine 6 at -20 to +20°C temperature using a wetted wall type reactor to raise the hydrogen chloride concentration in the hydrochloric acid used as a solvent and simultaneously reduce the amount of hold-up in the reactor. Thereby, formation of by-products based on both hypochlorous acid and chlorination is suppressed to afford 2,3-dichloro-1-propanol in high yield. Furthermore, the aforementioned wetted wall type reactor has the following structure. Plural pipes 1 are normally provided in a vertical state and the raw material solution 5 of the allyl alcohol dissolved in the hydrochloric acid at a high concentration is made to flow down on the inner wall thereof. The chlorine 6 or the chlorine diluted with the hydrogen chloride is made to flow in a cocurrent state. A refrigerant 9 is simultaneously passed through the outside of the pipes 1 for cooling.
