PURPOSE: To obtain a compound useful as a raw material for polyimide resins readily in high purity and yield and at a low cost, by condensing a compound prepared as a linear dimer of 4-chloronitrobenzene and 4-isopropenylphenol and reducing the resultant condensate.
CONSTITUTION: 4-Chloronitrobenzene is reacted with 2,4-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4- methyl-1-pentene expressed by formula I and/or 2,4-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4- methyl-2-pentene expressed by formula II in the presence of a base, e.g. potassium carbonate, in an aprotic solvent at 70W220°C to give a compound expressed by formula III or formula IV or both, which are then reduced in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. palladium supported on active carbon, at 0W150°C to afford the aimed substance expressed by formula V.
