Abstract:
PURPOSE: To produce the titled compound useful as an intermediate for pharmaceutical or agricultural chemical, etc., easily in high yield, by selectively chlorinating the 4-site of a 3-alkylphenol with a specific amount of sulfuryl chloride at a specific temperature in the absence of solvent and catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A phenolic compound of formula I (R is ethyl or isopropyl) such as 4-chloro-3-ethylphenol is selectively chlorinated with 1W1.2mol-equivalent of sulfuryl chloride at 0W50°C in the absence of solvent and catalyst. After degassification of the reaction liquid, the product is purified by vacuum distillation to obtain the objective compound of formula II such as 3-ethylphenol.
