PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as an intermediate in the field of the perfume industry and agricultural chemicals simply in high yields by using an arylcarbinol as a starting material and reacting it with n-propanol in the presence of a basic catalyst under specified conditions.
CONSTITUTION: An arylcarbinol of formula I (wherein R1 and R2 are each H or an up to 8C alkyl or a cycloalkyl) as a starting material is reacted with n-propanol at 250-350°C, desirably 260-290°C for about 5-12 hr in the presence of a catalytic amount of an alkali hydroxide or an alkali alcoholate in a sealed tube to obtain a compound of formula II. The starting material of formula I is particularly desirably p-methylbenzyl alcohol or p-isopropyl benzyl alcohol. The amount of the above basic catalyst used is desirably 0.6-1.6 wt.% based on the reaction mixture.
