To obtain the subject compound industrially and advantageously by reacting a specific 2-{6-(halomethyl)quinolin-2-yl}benzoic acid with a secondary amine in the presence of a base, useful as a therapeutic agent for hypertension as an angiotensin II antagonist.
A 2-{6-(halomethyl)quinolin-2-yl}benzoic acid of the formula (Z is chlorine, bromine or iodine) is reacted with a secondary amine (e.g. 2- ethyl-5,7-dimethyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine, etc.) in the presence of a base (e.g. sodium hydroxide, etc.) in an organic solvent such as N,N- dimethylformamide, etc., under cooling with ice and the reaction mixture is poured into an aqueous solution of sodium chloride. The water layer is neutralized with 3N hydrochloric acid and the precipitated sediment is collected to give the objective compound (e.g. 2-{6-[(2-ethyl-5,7-dimethyl-3H-imidazo[4,5- b]pyridin-3-yl)methyl-2-yl}benzoic acid, etc.) useful as a therapeutic agent for hypertension as an angiotensin II antagonist.
