To obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for a polymer modifier, agrochemical, medicine and perfume, by hydrogenating 7-octen-1-al in the presence of a copper-based catalyst and adjusting 7-octen-1-al to a specific conversion.
7-Octene-1-al is hydrogenated in a solventless state or in an inert solvent (methanol, etc.) in the presence of ≤10wt.% based on the total amount of a copper-based catalyst (copper chromate compound, reducing copper, etc.) under 1 to 200 atmospheric pressure of hydrogen pressure at 150-200°C and conversion of 7-octen-1-al is controlled to ≤95% to give industrially advantageously the objective compound. The catalyst is removed from the compound by filtration or centrifuging and the purity of the compound is raised by distillation, etc.
