Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce aldehydes and/or alcohols in a high selectivity by the vapor-phase hydrogenation reaction of a carboxylic acid. SOLUTION: A carboxylic acid or its derivative is reduced with molecular hydrogen in vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst produced by supporting a ruthenium component on a carrier composed mainly of a tin oxide. The ratio of the tin oxide in the carrier is 80-100%. The amount of ruthenium is 0.01-20 pts.wt. in terms of ruthenium metal based on 100 pts.wt. of the tin oxide in the catalyst and the carboxylic acid is an aromatic carboxylic acid.
