PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound suitable for many uses by oxidizing a compound containing an active hydroxyl group, and by selectively oxidizing an active hydroxyl group by the use of an aryltellurinic acid anhydride without changing other substituent groups.
CONSTITUTION: A compound containing an active hydroxyl group is oxidized in the presence of a compound shown by the formula [Ar is aryl which may contain one or more substituent groups (e.g. 1W8C alkyl, alkoxyl, substituted or unsubstituted amino, substituted or unsubstituted phenoxy, benzyl or halogen)] to give a carbonyl compound such as aldehyde, ketone, etc., corresponding to the raw material. Since oxidizing action by the compound shown by the formula is moderate and has selectivity, this method is applicable to cases wherein the active hydroxyl group contains various substituent groups and the active hydroxyl group is selectively oxidized without changing the substituent groups so that many useful carbonyl compounds can be produced.
