PURPOSE: To obtain a catalyst component capable of polymerizing a polycyclic olefin with a high activity, by dispersing a complex of a transition metal compound and electron donative compound and an inorganic oxide in a medium, reacting an organoaluminum compound therewith and washing the resultant product.
CONSTITUTION: (A) For example, a complex of a transition metal compound, e.g. WCl6, and an electron donative compound, e.g. ethyl benzoate, pyridine, ethylenediamine or diethyl ether, and (B) an inorganic oxide used as a carrier, e.g. silica or alumina, are dispersed in an inert liquid medium, e.g. hexane or heptane, and an organoaluminum compound, e.g. diethylaluminum chloride or ethylaluminum sesquichloride, in a molar amount of normally 5W30 times based on the electron donative compound is reacted with the complex (A) and inorganic oxide (B) in the dispersed state to give a solid product, which is then washed with the inert liquid medium to afford the aimed catalyst component.
