PURPOSE: To improve the mechanical strength of a composite carbon fiber/ carbon material by kneading the short fibers of carbon fibers, carbon powder having a specific average particle size and liquid binder respectively at prescribed weight compsn. ratios, then molding and sintering the mixture.
CONSTITUTION: 100pts.wt. short fibers of the carbon fibers and 10W30pts.wt. carbon powder having ≤30μm average particle size are compounded with 100pts. wt. thermosetting resin, etc., such as phenolic resin and the mixture is kneaded at ordinary temp. or in a heated state. The cured mixture is ground and molded the ground powder material and further, the molding is calcined in an inert atmosphere to form the composite carbon fiber/carbon material. The weight compsn. ratio of the carbon powder is confined to 10W30wt. ratio and the average particle size thereof to ≤30μm and, therefore, the bonding strengths between the respective component compsns. increase. The mechanical strength of the composite carbon fiber/carbon material is thereby improved.
