Title:
PRODUCTION OF ALUMINA/ALUMINUM COMPOSITE MATERIAL
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3237770
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To increase the hardness of the resulting composite material by adding Mg and a transition metal to Al as a base metal and carrying out oxidation by heating.
CONSTITUTION: A mother alloy sample 1 prepd. by adding ≥1wt.% Mg and a prescribed amt. of a transition metal to Al as a base metal is put in a crucible 2 in the air and oxidized by heating at about 1,200°C for about 24 hr to produce the objective alumina/aluminum composite material 3 as a reactional product. The amt. of the residual aluminum can be regulated in accordance with conditions in the oxidation reaction. The hardness of the composite material is increased by adding the transition metal to Al as the base metal. The reason for this increase is supposed that other compds. such as the fresh oxide of the transition metal and an intermetallic compd. are simultaneously formed during the oxidation reaction.
