To produce the subject compound in high yield by hydrogenating and reducing an acylbenzene derivative in the presence of a ruthenium catalyst.
An acylbenzene derivative represented by formula I [R2 is H, a 1-20C alkyl or the like; A2 is a group represented by formula II (the ring C1 is 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or the like; L1 is CH2CH2 or the like), a single bond or the like; B2 is represented by formula III (the ring C3 is 1,4- cyclohexylene or the like; L3 is CH2 or the like; R3 is H, a 1-20C alkyl or the like) or the like; the ring D2 is a (substituted) 1,4-phenylene or the like] is hydrogenated and reduced in the presence of (B) a ruthenium catalyst to produce (C) a compound represented by formula IV {R1 is H, a 1-10C alkoxyl or the like; A1 is a group represented by formula V [(La is CH2CH2 or the like; the ring E1 is 1,4-cyclohexylene or the like) or a single bond]; B1 is R0 (R0 is H or the like) or the like; the ring D1 is a (substituted) 1,4-phenylene or the like}. In the above reaction, the component B is preferably used in an amount of ≥0.005 wt.% based on the component A.
