Abstract:

To remove high-boiling by-products and produce the subject compound useful as a raw material for polyurethane resins, etc., in high purity by condensing an alkanal or an α-alkylacrolein with formaldehyde and then extracting the resultant reactional product solution with a specific ether.

A ≥3C alkanal or ≥3C α-alkylacrolein having two hydrogen atoms on the carbon atom at the α-position is reacted with formaldehyde in the presence of a basic compound and water to provide a reactional product solution containing an α,α-dimethylolalkanol. The resultant reactional product solution is then extracted with a 5-9C ether to remove high-boiling by-products such as a trimer of the α,α-dimethylolalkanol as an ether solution.
