Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a new method for synthesizing a high-purity diol derivative in high yield without requiring a precise temperature control and a large amount of a reaction medium in synthesizing a diol derivative as an intermediate for various dial compounds useful for medicines and agrochemicals.
CONSTITUTION: In production of a diol derivative from a ketone compound or an aldehyde compound as a raw material, the raw material is mixed with a reducing agent composed of a metal of the group 2 to the group 4, a catalyst composed of a vanadium compound and an activator composed of a Lewis acid. The raw material is reacted in a solvent capable of dissolving the catalyst to synthesize the diol compound.
