Abstract:
PURPOSE: To readily obtain the subject compound, useful as a raw material for vitamin K2, etc., and containing a double bond in the trans-form according to a specific method for using a mixture of an ester derivative containing the double bond which is the cis-form with a geranylgeraniol ester derivative as a raw material.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of an ester derivative of formula I (R is an aromatic group or a ≥7C aliphatic group) in which the double bond is the cis-form (e.g. geranylneryl stearate) with an ester derivative of formula II (e.g. geranylgeranyl stearate) is initially usually crystallized with methanol, n-hexane, etc., as a crystallizing solvent to thereby selectively afford an ester derivative of formula II, which is then usually hydrolyzed by a method for adding and reacting an aqueous solution of an alkali metallic compound such as NaOH thereto and carrying out the reaction in an alcoholic organic solvent. Thereby, the objective 3,7,11,15-tetramethylhexadeca-2E,6E,10E,14-tetraenol (i.e., geranylgeraniol) is obtained. The hydrolysis is preferably carried out at 20-80°C.
