Abstract:

PURPOSE: To remarkably shorten the reactional time, improve the reactional efficiency and industrially and advantageously produce glyoxylic acids by decomposing fumaric acids used as a raw material with ozone.

CONSTITUTION: Fumaric acid or its derivative, e.g. a monoester or a diester of the fumaric acid is oxidized with ozone in an alcoholic solvent, subsequently hydrogenated and reduced to afford glyoxylic acids. Diethyl fumarate is most suitable for the ester in the raw material. In this case, ethyl alcohol is preferred as a solvent. A special apparatus or device is not required for this method. Thereby, the space velocity can be further increased to raise the production efficiency when the reaction is industrially carried out in, e.g. a countercurrent contact type reactor by using this method.
