Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To economically produce a high-purity benzyl alcohol useful as a solvent, an intermediate, etc., for medicines by constructing a separating and a purifying processes from an azeotropic relationship among respective components of a hydrolytic product of benzyl acetate and circulating the respective fractions through specific steps.
SOLUTION: (A1) Benzyl acetate, (A2) water and (A3) acetic acid are fed to a hydrolytic reactor 1 and reacted in the presence of a solid acidic catalyst to provide a reactional product comprising the components A1, A2, A3 and (B) benzyl alcohol. The resultant reactional product is then fed to a recovering column 2 for the acetic acid and water and separated into an overhead component (XT) comprising the components A2 and A3 and a bottom product (XB) consisting essentially of the components A1 and B. Most of the component A3 is separated from the overhead component (XT) in a separating column 4 for the acetic acid and water and the resultant product is then circulated through the hydrolytic reactor 1. The bottom product XB is further preferably distilled in an alcohol concentrating column 3 and separated into an overhead fraction (YT) comprising the components A1 and B and the bottom product YB comprising the component A1. The obtained bottom product YB is subsequently circulated through the hydrolytic reactor 1 to afford the component B from the overhead fraction YT.
