Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method capable of economically producing high-purity benzyl alcohol.
SOLUTION: Benzyl acetate is fed from the upper part of a reaction distillation tower and methanol is fed from the lower part of the reaction distillation tower and benzyl acetate is countercurrently subjected to contact reaction with methanol in the presence of a basic catalyst to afford a tower top fraction consisting essentially of methyl acetate and methanol and a tower bottom solution consisting essentially of methanol and benzyl alcohol and the tower bottom solution of the reaction distillation tower is fed to a methanol separation tower and distilled to separate the solution into a tower top fraction consisting essentially of methanol and the tower bottom solution consisting essentially of benzyl alcohol and the tower top fraction of the methanol separation tower is circulated to the reaction distillation tower and the tower bottom solution of the methanol separation tower is fed to an alcohol purification tower and distilled to provide the objective benzyl alcohol.
