PURPOSE: To improve the toughness of a stainless steel strip and also to improve workability by subjecting a slab of ferritic stainless steel containing Al, Si, and Mo and having low carbon and nitrogen contents to specific hot rolling, to rapid cooling, and to coiling at low temp.
CONSTITUTION: A slab of ferritic stainless steel having a composition which contains, by weight, ≤0.03% C, ≤0.03% N, 10-40% Cr, and >5.0-15.0% of one or more elements among AN, Si, and Mo and in which (C+N) is regulated to ≤0.03% is subjected to heavy draft rolling, where sum total R of reductions of area is regulated to ≥20%, in the recovery temp. region not higher than the recrystallization temp. Ts represented by equation Ts°C=700+20(Al+Si+ Mo)+4R (where R means the sum total percentage of reductions of area in the recovery temp. region), and hot rolling is completed. As the components of the above steel slab, prescribed amounts of rare earth elements and/or one or more elements among Ti, Nb, V, Zr, Ta, Hf, and B can be further added, if necessary. After the above hot rolling, the resulting hot rolled plate is successively cooled rapidly at a rate of ≥10°C/sec and coiled at ≤500°C.
