Abstract:

To make it possible to stably set the pretilt angle of every liquid crystal element at a design value by measuring the surface energy of oriented films after the rubbing treatment of substrates and executing the treatment while controlling rubbing treatment conditions according to the measured values at the time of subjecting the oriented films formed on the respective substrates to the rubbing treatments.

The surface energy of the oriented film after the rubbing treatment of the one substrate is measured and the treatment is executed while the conditions of the rubbing treatment are controlled according to the measured values of the surface energy at the time of subjecting the oriented films formed on the respective substrates of the plural substrates to the rubbing treatment in the process for producing the plural liquid crystal elements constituted by holding liquid crystals between a pair of the substrates respectively provided with electrodes and the oriented films. The recommended practice of this time is to measure the surface energy of the oriented film of every specified number of the substrates and to continuously subject the plural substrates to the rubbing treatment while regulating the conditions of the rubbing treatment, i.e., the number of revolutions of a rubbing roller and/or pressing pressure according to the resulted values of the surface energy.
