To obtain the texture suitable for respective regions with good productivity by varying the abrasive grains in a slurry in the CSS region and data recording region of a magnetic recording medium at the time of texturing.
While a substrate 1 is rotated, a polishing tape 2 is brought into contact therewith and the substrate is subjected to texturing by supplying the slurry contg. the abrasive grains from slurry supply nozzles 5, 6. At this time, the slurries contg. the abrasive grains of respectively different grain sizes are supplied to the substrate parts which are the CSS region on the inner side of the magnetic recording medium and the data recording region. Namely, the slurry of, for example, 1.7 μm in the average grain size of the abrasive grains consisting of alumina, silicon carbide, etc., is supplied to the substrate 1 of the CSS region and the abrasive grains of 1.0 μm finer than the same are supplied to the substrate of the data region. The amt. of the slurry to be supplied is confined to a small amt. below 0.03 ml/cm2.min and the excess component is made to flow over in order to prevent the slurry to be supplied to the CSS region from being moved to the data recording region.
