Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve strength and toughness by adding water and a binder to a ceramic powder in a medium-free pot mill and mixing them for a prescribed time or more.
SOLUTION: As a reinforcement for the composite material, a ceramic powder of SiC, etc., is used. Respectively prescribed amounts of ion exchange water, binder such as colloidal alumina, are added to this powder of SiC, etc. The resultant blended material is mixed in a medium-free pot mill for ≥16hr, ≤about 100hr at the longest. The resultant mixture slurry is cast while applying vibrations. The resultant casting is frozen and drawn from a mold and then burned at 800-1600°C, by which a preform is prepared. This preform is impregnated with an Al alloy of Al-Mg, etc., in a nitrogen air flow under no pressure at 700-1000°C, by which a composite material is prepared. The resultant composite material is superior in strength and toughness to the conventional one even if the content of ceramics is high.
