To obtain the subject compound useful as e.g. a surfactant in high purity and yield by conducting a quaternarization reaction using methanol as reaction solvent.
This compound is obtained through a quaternarization reaction process followed by an anion exchange reaction process. The quaternarization reaction process is such one that (A) an N-alkylimidazoline compound is methylated by (B) dimethyl carbonate to form (C) a methyl N-alkyl-N'- methylimidazolinium carbonate. The anion exchange reaction process is such one that the compound C is reacted with (D) an inorganic acid. In the above case, methanol is used as the reaction solvent in the quaternarization reaction process; and in the ion exchange reaction process, the reaction is carried out by adding the compound C to an aqueous solution of the compound D. The compound A is pref. a compound of the formula (R1 is a 1-4C alkyl; R2 is H or a 1-19C alkyl; R3 and R4 are each H, methyl or ethyl), specifically, 1- methylimidazoline, 1-ethylimidazoline, 1,2-dimethylimidazoline, etc.; and the compound D is pref. perchloric acid, fluoroboric acid, etc.
