Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide an improved process for producing neopentyl glycol from isobutyraldehyde and formaldehyde.
CONSTITUTION: Isobutyraldehyde is allowed to react with paraformaldehyde to obtain a reaction product contg. hydroxypivaldehyde, a mixture of the reaction product with an alcohol of the formula; RR'CHOH (where R and R' are independently H or 1-5C alkyl) is formed and brought into contact with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and neopentyl glycol of at least about 99% purity is recovered.
