PURPOSE: To obtain a 2C oxygen-containing compound advantageously in high selectivity, by using scandium and lithium as a cocatalyst in reacting carbon monoxide with hydrogen in the presence of a rhodium catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Carbon monoxide is reacted with hydrogen in the presence of a rhodium catalyst and further scandium and lithium as a cocatalyst under conditions of 150W450°C, prepferably 200W350°C under 1W300atm, preferably 20W 200atm pressure in the case of a fixed bed flow type reactor used to give the aimed compound. The catalyst is prepared by dissolving the above-mentioned rhodium, scandium and lithium in a solvent, e.g. water or n-hexane, adding a porous inorganic carrier substance thereto, supporting the rhodium, etc. on the carrier substance by the impregnation, ion exchange method, etc., and reducing or heat-treating the resultant carrier supporting the rhodium, etc. The resultant catalyst is reduced to activate the rhodium for use in the reaction.
