PURPOSE: To advantageously obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material for liquid crystal materials by passing a 4-alkylbiphenyl-4'-aldehyde as a raw material through steps of the Baeyer-Villiger reaction, acetylation and liquid-phase oxidation with a molecular oxygen-containing gas.
CONSTITUTION: A 4-alkylbiphenyl-4'-aldehyde (alkyl group is lower hydrocarbon group) is reacted with a peroxide in the presence of a solvent and a catalyst to afford a 4-alkylbiphenyl-4'-hydroxy, which is then acetylated with acetic acid in the presence of acetic anhydride or an acid catalyst to provide a 4- alkylbiphenyl-4'-acetate. The resultant compound is subsequently oxidized with a molecular oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a solvent and a catalyst to afford a p-acetoxybiphenylcarboxylic acid which is conventionally difficult to produce and useful as a raw material for polymer liquid crystals, etc., in high yield and purity at a low cost.
