Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a compound useful as a precursor for p-hydroxybenzoic ester suitable as a mildewproofing agent and developer without requiring complicated process, by reacting isophthalic acid with oxygen and water in the presence of a cupric oxide catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Isophthalic acid is reacted with oxygen and water in the presence of cupric oxide at 150W300°C under 20W200kg/cm2G, preferably 200W280°C 50W150kg/cm2G for 0.5W10hr to give p-hydroxybenzoic acid. A solvent is not required. Cupric oxide as the catalyst may be any form of powder, granular or linear shape. The reaction is carried out by using 0.01W0.1mol, preferably 0.02W0.06mol catalyst based on 1mol isophthalic acid.
