Abstract:
PURPOSE: To efficiently produce a preform capable of providing an optical fiber having excellent strength by a method utilizing a powder compacting method.
CONSTITUTION: Silica powder is compacted by a powder compacting method to form a porous preform, this porous preform is purified in an atmosphere of helium mixed with 15-80vol.% chlorine and the purified porous preform is converted into transparent glass.
