Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a quinone derivative industrially and advantageously safely without using an expensive raw material by oxidizing a specific compound with nitric acid.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I {R1, R2 and R4 are H, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy; R3 is group of formula II [R5 is heteroarylalkyl or 2-20C alkyl; R6 is (protected)carboxyl] or formula III; X and Y are (protected)OH} is oxidized with nitric acid in a solvent such as ethyl acetate at ≤10°C optionally by using concentrated hydrochloric acid as a catalyst to give the objective compound of formula IV {e.g. 3-[5-(2,3-dimethoxy-6-methyl-1,4-benzoquinoyl)]-2- nonyl-2-propenoic acid}.
