Abstract:
PURPOSE:To produce titled whiskers contg. alpha-Si3N4 at a high concn. at a high yield by heating a mixture composed of specific ratios of SiO powder and carbon-contg. material in a nitriding atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:The mixture or molding prepd. by mixing the SiO powder having <=1mum grain size and the carbon-contg. material (e.g.; petroleum coke) in such a manner as to attain <=0.6 molar ratio of C/SiO is heated to 1,300-1,800 deg.C in the nitriding atmosphere adjusted to >=1atm partial pressure of N2.
