PURPOSE: To produce a high-purity sodium polysulfide directly from Na and S with a mild reaction by supplying molten Na and S under a protective gas into a specified molten polysulfide being violently agitated at the positions separated from each other of a cylindrical reactor.
CONSTITUTION: The stoichiometric rate of the desired molten polysulfide is charged into a vertical cylindrical reactor having such a diameter to surely separate the reaction zone between the Na and polysulfide from that between the S and polysulfide and having a flat bottom mildly inclined at an angle of about 3° to completely discharge and violently agitated under a protective gas of Ar, etc. Simultaneously, Na and S are melted and supplied in such amts. that the reaction mixture remains as a suspension capable of being agitated to the positions separated from each other, hence the reaction zones are separated, and the reaction is run.
