PURPOSE: To improve the quality of a steel ingot by cooling the ingot mold stool of a casting mold with water and controlling the flow rate of an inert gas for atomization of a molten steel in accordance with the specific equation.
CONSTITUTION: Mold side walls 1 are fixed onto the ingot mold stool 2 and the stool 2 is cooled with the water through the cooling water path disposed therein. A molten steel discharging pipe 4 is provided above the mold 3 and a gas nozzle 6 for atomization is disposed near the aperture end thereof. The inert gas is blown in the state of gas from the nozzle 6 toward the molten steel 5 flowing downward from the pipe 4. The molten steel is atomized and liquid drops 7 are formed; at the same time, the liquid drops fall into the mold 3, by which the steel ingot is obtd. The flow rate Q of the inert gas is so controlled as to satisfy the relation of the equation specified according to the height X of the molten metal surface from the base of the casting mold. The generation of blowholes and the segregation are both prevented and the quality of the steel ingot is improved by the above-mentioned method.
