PURPOSE: To reduce a fraction defective and to obtain the shadow mask having excellent uniformity with accurate hole shape by executing refined rolling by performing the patterning to satisfy specific conditions on the work roll for refined rolling.

CONSTITUTION: The patterning composed of the aggregation of a small crater- like recessed part 2 and the rise part 3 rised in an annular shape at the outer edge of this recessed part is executed by using a high density energy source on the surface of the work roll 1 for refined rolling. In this case, the ratio Sm/D of the mean center distance Sm between adjacent recessed parts 2 to the diameter D of the outer edge of the rise part 3 is regulated to 1.2≤Sm/D≤3.5, 30μm≤D≤500μm. The steel sheet for shadow mask is subjected to refined rolling by this patterned work roll. Consequently the fraction defective is reduced and the shadow mask with accurate hole shape is obtd.
