PURPOSE: To easily produce a long sized superconducting material by forming a base material having a desired shape of an alloy consisting of metallic elements among the constituting elements of a composite oxide superconductor and oxidizing the surface of the base material to form a superconductor layer.
CONSTITUTION: Metal powders of Y, Ba and Cu are first sufficiently mixed in a suitable solvent and in a nonoxidative atmosphere or in a vacuum until the atomic ratios of Y:B:Cu attain 1:2:3 in the case of the composite oxide superconductor of, for example, a Y-Ba-Cu-O system. Since the alloy prior to an oxidation stage obtd. in such a manner has metal or properties as metal, said alloy can be worked to desired shapes, for example, a wire rod, strip, etc., by working methods such as drawing, pressing and forging. Only the surface of the molding of the alloy obtd. in such a manner is oxidized by a method of heating the molding in gaseous oxygen flow or the like to form the composite oxide superconductor layer only on the surface.
