PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compounds most of which are new and which are useful in the production of vitamins A and E and perfumes by reacting a hydroperoxide with a compound such as geranyl chloride in the presence of an inorganic salt in a polar aprotic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A hydroperoxide of the formula: ROOH (wherein R is a t-alkyl or cycloalkyl which may be substituted with at least one phenyl group or the like) (e.g. t-butyl hydroperoxide) is reacted with a compound of formula I or II (wherein R1 to R3 are each H or an aliphatic group; R4 is an aliphatic group, or R3 is H, R2 and R4 may be combined with each other to form an alkylene; and X is an atom or a group which may be substituted with a nucleophilic substituent) at 0-50°C in the presence of an inorganic base in a polar aprotic solvent to obtain terpene peroxides of formula III (among them, when both of R3 and R4 are not methyl groups when R is t-butylperoxide, R1 is H, and R2 is not H, and when R4 is not methyl when R2 is methyl, and R3 is H, the compound is new).
