PURPOSE: To prepare the subject compound in high yield and purity by subjecting the adduction of a compound having active carbons to a substituted conjugated diene compound in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a novel bis(diphenylphosphone) alkane derivative methane sulfonate and a rhodium compound.
CONSTITUTION: A compound having active carbons expressed by formula IV (X, Y are electron-attracting group, etc.; R1, etc.,) (e.g. ethyl acetoacetate) is adduction-reacted to an alkyl conjugated diene compound of formula III ((n) is 0-4) (e.g. β-farnesene) in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a novel bis(diphenyl phosphine) alkane derivative methane sulfonate of formula ((m) is 4-6) (e.g. a phosphine derivative of formula II) and a rhodium compound in a water-miscible solvent to obtain a terpene of formula V (e.g. farnesylacetone). The terpene is useful as an intermediate or precursor for the synthesis of vitamins and perfumes.
