PURPOSE: To advantageously obtain the subject compound as a monomer for polymers improved in heat, water resistance, etc., by reacting an acryloyl or methacryloyl halide with an organic compound having thiol group in the presence of a catalyst using an industrially inexpensive basic substance.
CONSTITUTION: An acryloyl or methacryloyl halide expressed by the formula (R is H or methyl; X is Cl or Br) is reacted with an organic compound (e.g., 2-mercaptoethanol or 1,2-ethanedithiol) having thiol group in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst and further using an aqueous solution of a basic substance at 0-60°C, preferably 0-40°C to afford the objective compound. Furthermore, e.g., sodium hydroxide or ammonia, is used as the basic substance in an amount of 0.6-4.0, preferably 1.0-2.5 gram atomic equiv. ratio based on gram atomic equiv. thiol group in the organic compound having the thiol group.
