To obtain a translucent paper having excellent transparency and surface barrierness by applying a cellulose-dissolving solvent to a paper substrate composed of cellulose pulp and removing the solvent from the paper.

This translucent paper is produced by adding an epichlorohydrin resin to a cellulose pulp slurry, forming a paper substrate from the mixed slurry, applying or impregnating a liquid mixture containing 80-100wt.% of a cellulose- dissolving solvent comprising a t-amine oxide, preferably a cyclic amine N-oxide such as N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide and 0-20wt.% of water to the paper substrate and heat-treating the substrate at 70-150°C, preferably 80-140°C to evaporate the solvent.
