Abstract:

To provide a process for producing an unsaturated alcohol from an unsaturated aldehyde while minimizing the formation of saturated aldehyde and saturated alcohol as by-products.

An unsaturated alcohol of the formula III is produced by the selective hydrogenation of the carbonyl part of a corresponding unsaturated aldehyde containing a double bond in the molecule and expressed by the formula II using a Co-M/alumina catalyst expressed by the formula I. Formula I: Co-M /Al2O3 (M is Pt, Ru, Fe, Cu or Rh), Formula II: R1-CHO (R1 is a 1-8C straight- chain alkenyl, a 1-8C branched-chain alkenyl or a cyclic unsaturated alkenyl), Formula III: R1-CH2-OH (R1 is a straight-chain alkenyl, a branched-chain alkenyl or a cyclic unsaturated alkenyl).
